Forgot your passcode? Here is the honest fix
By the iphonefix.us editorial team · Research-based, last researched 30 October 2026.
It happens in the most ordinary way: you change the passcode, you do not write it down, and a week later the phone will not accept any of the numbers you are sure you used. At that point there is no secret menu and no clever trick. Apple designed the passcode so that repeated wrong guesses lock the phone down, and the official way out is to erase it and start again from a backup.
Before you erase: check for a backup
If the phone was backing up to iCloud, or to a computer you own, your photos, messages, and settings are probably recoverable after the erase. If there was no backup at all, erasing means losing what was only on the phone. That is painful, and it is exactly why this article also ends with a backup habit — but first, the fix itself.
Route 1: Erase with a computer
Put the iPhone into recovery mode (the button combination depends on the model — check Apple's support page for your exact iPhone), connect it to a Mac or PC, and choose Restore when Finder or iTunes offers it. The phone erases, installs a fresh iOS, and then asks you to set it up. Sign in with your Apple Account, because Activation Lock is still on, and restore the backup you found earlier.
Route 2: Erase with Find My, if you can sign in
If you can sign in to iCloud.com with the same Apple Account that is on the phone, Find My can erase the device remotely. This only works if the phone is online and Find My was on. After the erase, setup still asks for that same Apple Account — erasing never removes the account link.
What not to do
- Do not keep guessing for hours. Repeated wrong passcodes disable the phone for longer and longer, and eventually require the same erase anyway.
- Do not pay a site that promises to recover the passcode and keep your data. That is not an official capability, and the usual outcome is a lost payment, not a recovered phone.
- Do not use this guide on someone else's phone. If the phone is not yours, the only legitimate next step is returning it to its owner.
After you are back in: the backup habit
Turn on iCloud Backup in Settings, your name, iCloud, iCloud Backup, and check that a recent backup actually exists. Or back up to a computer you trust, regularly. The next time a passcode is forgotten, the erase will be an annoyance instead of a data disaster.
Frequently asked questions
I forgot my passcode. Can I unlock the phone without erasing it?
No, not through any official route. If you cannot enter the passcode, the official fix is to erase the phone and restore from a backup. That is why backups matter before this happens.
After erasing, will it ask for my Apple Account?
Yes, if Find My and Activation Lock were on. Erasing removes the passcode, not the account link. You still need the owner's Apple Account to set the phone up again.
Can a shop or tool recover my passcode without erasing?
Treat that claim as a scam risk. There is no legitimate consumer tool that recovers a forgotten iPhone passcode while keeping the data, and any site promising it should not be trusted with your phone or payment.
