Apple ID recovery: the official route
By the iphonefix.us editorial team · Research-based, last researched 30 October 2026.
Short answer: try a trusted device first, then iforgot.apple.com. If you have no trusted device and no recovery factors, Apple Account Recovery is a waiting period — days to weeks — by design. Nobody can legitimately speed it up for a fee.
Step 1: Use a trusted device if you have one
A trusted device is an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch already signed in with two-factor authentication. On it, change your password from Settings (your name > Sign-In and Security > Change Password). This is the fastest route and avoids account recovery entirely. If you will regain access to a trusted device or trusted number soon, wait for it — it is quicker than starting recovery.
Step 2: Reset via iforgot.apple.com
Type iforgot.apple.com into your browser yourself — do not click a password-reset link from an email or text you did not expect. Enter the email address or phone number linked to your Apple Account, then follow the prompts. Apple may ask for a code sent to your trusted phone number, a code from a recovery contact, or your recovery key if you set one up.
Never share a six-digit verification code with anyone, including someone claiming to be Apple Support. Apple will never phone you to ask for your password or a code.
Step 3: Account recovery (the waiting period)
If you cannot provide recovery factors, start account recovery from iforgot.apple.com or the Apple Support app. You will give a phone number Apple can contact, then wait. Apple confirms a date when access is expected — do not submit a second request in the meantime, because a new request can extend the wait.
Recovery contacts and recovery keys change this process: a recovery contact can give you a six-digit code (they never get access to your account), while a 28-character recovery key replaces standard recovery — and Apple cannot provide it if you lose it. Set these up after you regain access, so the next lockout is easier.
After you get back in
- Set a new, unique password and turn on two-factor authentication if it is not already on.
- Add a second trusted phone number and a recovery contact.
- Check Settings for unknown devices and sign out any you do not recognise.
- Store your recovery key somewhere safe and offline, if you choose to use one.

Example: the old number problem
People often lose access because their trusted phone number was an old SIM they no longer own. If an iPad or Mac is still signed in with the same account, changing the password there is usually faster than starting account recovery at all. Check every device you still own before you start the waiting period.
Warning: Never enter your Apple ID password on a page reached from a text message or email. Type iforgot.apple.com yourself — fake recovery pages are built for exactly this moment.
