Activation Lock: the official route
By the iphonefix.us editorial team · Research-based, last researched 30 October 2026.
Short answer: Activation Lock is tied to the owner's Apple Account on Apple's servers. It is fully removed only when the owner signs in, the previous owner removes the device from their account, or Apple approves a support request with proof of purchase. No desktop tool, website, or IMEI service can officially do this for you.
What Activation Lock actually is
When Find My is on, your iPhone is linked to your Apple Account. Even after a factory reset, setup asks for that account. That is deliberate: a reset alone must not turn a stolen phone into a usable phone. This is why “bypass” claims that promise a normal, fully working phone after a reset should be treated with suspicion — the lock lives on Apple's side, not only on the device.
Route 1: Sign in with the original Apple Account
If you know the account and password, sign in at setup. That is the complete fix, with full functionality restored. If you have forgotten the password, use the official Apple Account recovery route first — see our Apple ID recovery guide — rather than paying a third party.
Route 2: Ask the previous owner to remove it remotely
The previous owner does not need the phone in hand. They sign in at iCloud.com, open Find My, choose All Devices, select the iPhone, and choose Remove from Account (after erasing if needed). Once removed, the buyer can set the phone up with their own account.
Before you pay for a used iPhone: ask the seller to do this in front of you, or before money changes hands. See the used iPhone checklist.
Route 3: Apple Support request with proof of purchase
If you cannot reach the previous owner, Apple Support may remove Activation Lock — but only if you can prove you are the rightful owner. Typically that means an original receipt or invoice showing the device serial number or IMEI, matching your identity, and a device that is not reported lost or stolen.
Start from Apple's official support route for Activation Lock and follow its ownership form. Expect Apple to verify, not to make an exception on explanation alone. If you bought second-hand without a receipt and cannot contact the seller, be honest with yourself: Apple will usually decline, and that is the point of the lock.
What does not work as a real fix
- Paid IMEI “unlock” sites: they cannot change Apple's account link. At best you lose money; at worst you hand over your IMEI and payment details to a scam.
- “Bypass” tools: some older, jailbreak-based methods can show a limited home screen on old checkm8 devices, often without cellular service, calls, or iCloud — and they do not restore a normal phone. They are not a substitute for removal, and they are covered honestly in our tools directory.
- Factory reset / DFU restore: this does not remove Activation Lock. It only brings you back to the same setup screen.
Sources and limits
This page is research-based (30 October 2026) and summarises Apple's official Activation Lock support position plus the support-request flow documented by Apple Support guides. Carrier rules, Apple policies, and tool claims change — re-check the official Apple Support page before acting. This page contains no instructions for defeating a lock on a device you do not own.

Example: the promise to fix it later
A common trap at a market stall or in a chat deal goes like this: the seller says the phone is fine, the previous owner's account will be removed later, and asks you to pay first. If the seller can remove it, they can do it before you pay — in front of you, on iCloud.com. Later almost never happens, and once the money is gone you have no leverage left.
Tip: Before paying anyone, ask the seller to remove the device from their iCloud account while you watch. If they refuse or say they cannot, walk away from the deal.
Frequently asked questions
Can Apple remove Activation Lock without proof of purchase?
Usually no. Apple removes it for a verified owner with a receipt or invoice showing the serial number or IMEI, and a device that is not reported lost or stolen.
Does a factory reset remove Activation Lock?
No. A reset or DFU restore brings you back to the same setup screen asking for the original Apple Account.
Can the previous owner remove it without the phone?
Yes. They sign in at iCloud.com, open Find My, select the device, and choose Remove from Account.
