MDM lock, explained plainly

By the iphonefix.us editorial team · Research-based, last researched 30 October 2026.

Illustration of an iPhone managed by an organisation

MDM stands for Mobile Device Management. It is not a fault, and it is not a lock you forgot the password to. It is a system that lets an organisation manage iPhones it owns: a company handing phones to staff, a school giving iPads to students, a delivery firm tracking its fleet. When a phone is enrolled, the organisation can push apps, enforce a passcode policy, restrict features, and wipe the phone if it is lost.

How you know a phone is MDM-enrolled

At setup, instead of going straight to the home screen, the phone shows a remote-management screen naming an organisation, or Settings shows a management profile and a message that the device is supervised or managed. Sometimes a used phone looks normal until it is reset — then the management screen appears again, because enrolment is tied to the device in Apple's systems, not just to a setting you can delete.

Who can remove it

Only the organisation's administrator, through their management system. They can release the device, and only then does it become a normal personal phone. There is no setting, no reset, and no consumer tool that legitimately removes someone else's organisation enrolment. Tools that advertise “MDM bypass” for buyers are, at best, temporary workarounds that break on the next reset or update — and at worst, a way to sell you a phone that was never theirs to sell.

If you are the administrator

Remove the device from your management console, confirm it is released, and then erase it before handing it to a new user. That is the clean handover. If you are an employee leaving a job, ask IT to release the phone in writing before you pay anything for it or assume it is yours.

If you already bought an MDM phone

Contact the seller first and ask them to have the organisation release it. If the seller cannot name the organisation, or disappears, you have likely bought a device that was not legitimately for sale. Do not pay a bypass service next — that money usually goes the same way as the phone's usefulness on the next update.

Frequently asked questions

What is MDM on an iPhone?

Mobile Device Management is how an organisation — a company, school, or agency — manages phones it owns. It can install apps, enforce settings, and control the device remotely.

Can I remove MDM from a phone I bought second-hand?

Only the organisation that enrolled it can remove it. If you are not that organisation's administrator, there is no legitimate way to remove it yourself.

Should I buy a phone that shows an MDM screen at setup?

No, not for personal use. Walk away, or only proceed if the seller is the organisation itself and removes the enrolment in front of you first.
