Moving to a new iPhone, without losing anything

Illustration of transferring data to a new iPhone

The riskiest moment in a phone upgrade is not the purchase. It is the hour when you erase the old phone because you assume the new one already has everything. Do the transfer, check the new phone properly, and only then touch the old one.

Option 1: Quick Start, phone to phone

Turn on the new iPhone, put it near the old one, and follow Quick Start. Keep both phones on Wi-Fi and charging, and do not walk away mid-transfer — interrupting it is how partial transfers happen. When it finishes, open the new phone and actually check: photos, messages, WhatsApp chats, banking apps, and any two-factor app. Banking and authenticator apps often need to be re-verified even after a perfect transfer, so do that while the old phone still works.

Option 2: Restore from a backup

If the old phone is broken, lost, or already gone, set the new phone up from your most recent iCloud or computer backup instead. Everything up to that backup returns; anything created after it does not. That is why the backup date matters more than the transfer method — check it before you need it, not after.

Before you sell or give away the old phone

  1. Confirm the new phone has everything you need, including authenticator codes.
  2. On the old phone, sign out of your Apple Account. This removes Activation Lock — skipping this step is how a buyer ends up locked out of a phone you sold them in good faith.
  3. Erase all content and settings, then check that setup no longer asks for your account.
  4. Remove the old phone from your Apple Account's trusted devices list.

Selling a phone that still asks for your account does not just hurt the buyer. It usually comes back to you as messages, disputes, and a refund demand. Five minutes of signing out properly avoids all of it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the easiest way to move to a new iPhone?

Quick Start: put the old and new iPhones near each other, follow the on-screen transfer, and keep both on Wi-Fi and charging until it finishes. It moves most data directly, without a computer.

Do I need to turn off Find My on the old phone before selling it?

Yes — sign out of your Apple Account on the old phone and erase it only after the transfer is complete and you have checked the new phone. Signing out removes Activation Lock for the next owner.

What if my old phone is broken and will not turn on?

Then Quick Start cannot run. Restore the new phone from your most recent iCloud or computer backup instead, and accept that anything created after that backup is gone.
